Code of Conduct
This Code of Conduct applies to Mapchine’s website and communications, courses and workshops (online or in-person), scientific tours/field experiences, and any Mapchine-hosted event or community space (collectively, “Activities”).
By participating in Mapchine Activities, you agree to follow this Code of Conduct.
1. Our Values
Mapchine is committed to:
- Scientific integrity and transparent methods
- Safety in field and technical environments
- Respect for people, places, communities, and ecosystems
- Professional collaboration and constructive learning
- Responsible use of geospatial technologies
2. Expected Behavior
We expect everyone participating in Mapchine Activities to:
- Be respectful and inclusive
- Treat others with professionalism and courtesy
- Use welcoming language and engage in good faith
- Respect differences and boundaries
- Maintain scientific and professional integrity
- Give proper credit to sources and collaborators
- Do not falsify data, results, or field records
- Follow project protocols and instructions from Mapchine leads/instructors
- Use equipment responsibly
- Follow operational guidance for tools and instruments (GPS, sensors, UAV workflows, field kits)
- Respect restricted areas and site rules
- Report hazards or incidents promptly
3. Unacceptable Behavior
The following conduct is not allowed in any Mapchine context:
Harassment and discrimination
- Harassment, intimidation, threats, stalking, or bullying
- Discrimination or hateful conduct based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, or any other protected status
- Unwanted sexual attention, inappropriate contact, or persistent unwelcome behavior
Disruption and misconduct
- Repeated disruption of instruction, meetings, or field operations
- Abusive language or aggressive behavior
- Deliberate interference with others’ work, learning, or participation
Safety violations
- Ignoring instructions in hazardous environments
- Reckless behavior near water, steep slopes, roads, machinery, wildlife, or extreme terrain
- Unauthorized equipment use or behavior that puts others at risk
Data misuse and confidentiality violations
- Sharing restricted project data or client information without authorization
- Attempting to access accounts, systems, or datasets without permission
- Recording or redistributing course materials when prohibited
4. Photography, Recording, and Media
- Ask for consent before photographing or recording identifiable individuals in Mapchine Activities.
- Some Activities may prohibit recording due to safety, privacy, sensitive locations, or proprietary content—follow posted or announced rules.
- Mapchine may capture photos/videos for documentation or marketing. If you prefer not to appear, notify the event lead or email solutions@mapchine.com where feasible.
5. Field Safety Culture
In the field, safety is part of doing good science.
We work as a team: communicate clearly, stay aware of hazards, and support others.
Follow protocols for equipment and terrain, especially around water, slopes, roads, and wildlife.
If a situation becomes unsafe, Mapchine leads may adjust activities or ask someone to step out—no judgment, just risk management.
6. Compliance With Laws and Local Rules
Participants must comply with applicable laws and local rules, including landowner requirements, site restrictions, and any operational constraints set by Mapchine leads or partners.
7. Reporting Concerns
If you experience or witness behavior that violates this Code of Conduct:
- General concerns: solutions@mapchine.com
- Serious concerns / legal: legal@mapchine.com
- Or notify a Mapchine instructor/lead in person during an Activity
When reporting, include what happened, when/where it occurred, who was involved (if known), and any supporting details (messages, screenshots, etc.).
8. Enforcement
Mapchine may take actions appropriate to the situation, including:
- A verbal or written warning
- Removal from a session, workshop, or field Activity
- Suspension or termination of access to Mapchine Activities or platforms
- A ban from future events
- Contacting venue security or law enforcement when necessary
